Anna Hersey joins us for songs by  Lee Hoiby: Lady of the Harbor, Where the Music Comes, and Sonnets and Soliloquies by William Shakespeare. Hoiby (1926-2011) was an American composer and classical pianist. Best known as a composer of operas and songs, he was a disciple of composer Gian Carlo Menotti. Our violinist, Luis Fernandez, will arrange several of the songs for his wife, Anna, and the string quartet.

Samuel Barber’s String Quartet in B minor, Op. 11 (1936) will follow. The slow movement from the quartet has become one of the world’s most played pieces, arranged for string orchestra and known as “Adagio for Strings,” is a masterpiece of modern classical music. Music critic Donal Henahan stated of Barber (1910-1981) that "probably no other American composer has ever enjoyed such early, such persistent and such long-lasting acclaim." We will close with Antonin Dvorak's String Quartet in F major, Op. 96,  the "American." Dvorak composed the quartet in 1893 when he was visiting the Czech immigrant community of Spillville, Iowa.
